Make Ahead

When I was in law school, I had a friend who was in both the law and seminary schools. So one day I didn’t have anything planned for the evening, so my friend invited me to a party thrown by his seminary friends. Okay, so to give some context here, I’m fairly shy and going to a party where I know only one person still gets me a little nervous. The idea of having to meet all those people who already know each other and make small talk is just appalling to me. I’m terrible at small talk. Like really terrible. I was out at my dad’s house last weekend. Every so often I get treated to pancakes while I’m there, but most of the time breakfast at Dad’s involves juice, coffee, fruit, yogurt and granola. Not a bad start to the day. One of the things I find interesting though, is that Dad and my step-mom each have their own granola. Dad likes the granola that comes in large pieces that have been broken from a large sheet of granola, almost like large granola bars, while my step-mom tends to eat granola that is closer to cereal in that it consists of smaller clusters.  It’s December! I love this month! It’s a month of happy music, cozy fires and red coffee cups at Starbucks. And it’s the perfect time for some hot cocoa. There’s nothing like curling up on the sofa with a big fuzzy blanket, lighting some candles and sipping on a big tasty mug of hot cocoa, all draped in whipped cream and and marshmallows. All the better if you have a guilty indulgence of a book to dive into or a cheesy Christmas movie on the television. When I decide to have hot chocolate at home, it’s usually a bit of an affair that involves melting chocolate and whisking up a rich concoction over the stove…but sometimes I’m just not feeling

Well, it’s almost the end of October, which means that the pumpkin frenzy has reached its peak. We’ll be riding that wave all the way to the Thanksgiving, but it’s about to be replaced by the cranberry craze. Don’t get me wrong, I’m on board with an intensive two months of fresh cranberry goodness. They only get about  8 weeks a year, so I’m ready to give it my all. But before we get to that I’m going to sneak in a few more pumpkin recipes, starting with this pumpkin ravioli.
